one of the most common questions is can i do it?
can you really learn to plaster in 5 days?
Goldtrowel have been teaching plastering for a long time and
have a tried and tested unique method
firstly the training is not for 5 days but considerably
longer if you follow the plan for the 5 day plastering training course
when you book a course you are sent 2 films on DVD or VHS
video to study, and we mean study, not just watch
you also have access to the training manual and other
information via the members login
you will need to study this to complete the examination
prior to attending the course (if you require certification)
when you turn up at the training centre its fully
hands on, no time to sit around. and of course you have studied
and have a very good knowledge of plastering and the
terminology that goes with plastering.
uncle bobs mate said it takes years to learn
plastering! Rubbish!
its easier than learning to drive, what uncle
bobs mate is referring to is a recognised apprenticeship.
the curriculum for the city and guilds
qualification has less than 1/8th of the course solid
plastering
city & guilds is a fantastic qualification
to hold in any profession, in plastering the majority of the
course is based upon fibrous plastering and moulds run in situ
and cast,
we don't teach you fibrous although we have
running moulds at the centre for you to study if curious.
what you learn at the centre is, plaster
boarding, angle beading, skimming over boards, rendering,
floating walls flat and level, skimming the floated walls,
carry out different repairs to ceilings and walls, then during
the week we move you to a different bay (room) with different
dimensions, size & shape, now you will have to reskim (pva
glue and skim) the complete room re-beading as necessary. at
this stage your finish should be to a very good standard, all
that's left is to put up coving and lay the floor screeds, we
cover different types of roof screeds, as well as the
standard flat and level floor screed, now rip it all down and
go home to recover.
can women plaster?
we get emails and letters from women asking can
they learn solid plastering, we will always inform you that its
very tough going even for many men, but the women that have
attended the courses have all been extraordinary in there
ability,
solid plastering is more aerobic physically as
opposed to heavy, stamina speed and forward thinking are 3 good
ingredients
the film clip below is saved in mpeg format
and shows Jane groves on a 2 day weekend course finishing off
day 1: Jane sets her angle beads level, then
fixes plaster boards to the ceiling, next floats the walls flat
and level
day 2: scrim (fibre tape) the ceiling joints
then 2 coat skim the ceiling, quick lunch, 2 coat skim the
walls, rip it all down
can
you do it ?
only you have the answer
if you study the films and manual, watch and
listen to the demos at the centre, yes
if you think solid plastering would be too
strenuous for you, why not consider venetian marble plastering,
this is not physically demanding, but is very artistic,
Goldtrowel venetian marble plastering courses also come with
pre-study and are covered in 2 days at the training centre.
Goldtrowel members have plastering help and advice
available at the plasterers forum
